Missions:

Letter from Lee Kauffman

Missionary to the Jola people of West Africa

Subject: Subject: November 2007 Praise and Prayer Update for the Jola-fonyi People
Date: Mon 11/5/2007 3:44 AM

It is exciting to see how God continues to use “The Righteous Way” tapes.  Lee tries to visit two older men in our village 2-3 times each week.  In the past they have not been interested in studying the Bible but each time that Lee goes by to see them, they are ready to hear a story, say the story is good, and thank him for coming by.  These men are elders in the village and can make a difference in how the gospel is seen by others.  They are also old and frail and we feel an urgency for them to know Jesus as their Savior.  Please continue to pray that they will have ears to hear, mind to understand, heart to believe, and a spirit to follow Jesus.

Pray for Matt, Dennis, Jay, and Ruth from NorthRidge Fellowship, Jerome, Idaho who will be coming to pray in the village and work in the high school at Diouloulou, Senegal November 19-29.  Pray for their preparations to come, their travel safety, for their families as they are away from them, for the Lord to go before them preparing the way for open hearts in those they will meet and talk with each day, for the English teachers and students they will be talking with each day, and for the Lord to open doors in a miraculous way in Diouloulou so others will be open to hear the Gospel.  This will be their second trip to stay in this village.

Pray that God would raise up a Christian leader in Bougoutoub to lead both the men and the women who believe that Jesus is their Savior.  The Kauffman’s leave December 15 for stateside assignment and they are concerned that the storying and Bible study groups will not continue to meet to study God’s word and pray together.  It has been difficult to get the men and women to study the Bible together as in their Muslim/Jola culture the men and women do everything apart from each other.  There are jobs that are only done by the men and others that are only done by the women.  Pray that both of these groups would decide to meet together weekly to study the Bible and that would lead to a church in Bougoutoub.

Pray for the Imam (Mark) in the village of Koubalan.  He has been visiting at the Schmitz home and hearing the Bible read in Jola and parts of the “Way of Righteousness” tapes.  Pray that he would be responsive to the Gospel.  Pray that he would have dreams of Jesus.  Pray that he would be unsatisfied as he practices the rituals of his religion.

It is hard for the children to get an education in Senegal especially in the villages.  School officially started on Oct. 8th but in reality it didn’t start in the villages until October 29th.  In the villages where there is no electricity the rooms are dark.  There can be as many as 45-90 students in one classroom which means there are 3 students to one bench type desk.  The students do not have books so they write their lessons from the chalkboard into notebooks.  If the teacher is sick or needs to be gone, class is cancelled as there are no substitute teachers.  Most villages do not have a middle or high school so if you want your children to have a higher education you will have to send them off to a neighboring larger village and they would live with relatives or with another family that you would pay to provide them with food and housing.  The Jola team has been able to pray in some of these schools.  Please join us in praying that children can receive an education and at the same time have an opportunity to know about the true and living God.
